May 30, 2006 - The Vietnam Education Foundation (VEF) announces the Third Anniversary of Cooperation between VEF and the Ministry of Education and Training (MOET).
After three years operating in Vietnam, VEF has had a good start and is doing very well. Through the Fellowship Program, VEF has selected and placed nearly 200 Vietnamese nationals at 54 top U.S. graduate schools, including the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Stanford, and the University of California at Berkeley. In order to help build Vietnam's capacity in education, science and technology, VEF has been involved in several special projects, which include the development of Centers of Excellence and Vietnam OpenCourseWare, as well as the Higher Education Quality Assessment in Vietnam. In addition, VEF has organized and sponsored numerous scientific seminars and lectures with the participation of prestigious American scientists.
Referring to this success, Mr. Kien Pham, the VEF Executive Director said: "We are very pleased with the initial achievements gained through the past three years. As a result of the close cooperation with Vietnamese counterparts, especially the Ministry of Education and Training, we have confidence in implementing more sustainable projects to help Vietnam develop science and technology and, as a result, strengthen the relationship between the U.S. and Vietnam. This is a realization of the two governments' joint-statement, issued during P.M. Phan Van Khai's visit to the U.S. in June 2005.
Vice Minister Tran Van Nhung, who has been co-operating and working with VEF since the beginning, said: "The Ministry of Education and Training sees VEF as one of the bridges in helping Vietnam to advance the quality of higher education to high international standards. Based on our Statement of Principles for Cooperation, we have co-ordinated closely withVEF to implement its programs in Vietnam. In the future, we will continue to support VEF to achieve further success."
The anniversary celebration will be held on June 5, 2006, at Sofitel Plaza Hanoi, 1 Thanh Nien road, Hanoi. The event will begin with a Press Conference at 17:00 with MOET representatives, four VEF Board Members including Chairman Frank Jao, and the 2006 Cohort of VEF Fellows.
Following the Press Conference, a Reception Dinner will be held at 18:00. In addition to the Press Conference participants, in attendance will be H.E. Michael Marine, the U.S. Ambassador to Vietnam, Vietnamese Government officials, VEF Fellows' families, and many other distinguished guests.
The anniversary celebration is held during the pre-departure orientation for the new cohort of VEF Fellows, who will begin their graduate studies in the U.S. this fall.
